Avoid peak sun hours: Limit strenuous outdoor activities to early morning or evening. Avoid the hottest parts of the day typically between 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Pace yourself when outside and take frequent breaks in the shade.
Wear appropriate clothing: Choose loose-fitting, breathable, light-colored clothes made from cotton or linen. Light colors reflect sunlight while loose fabrics allow for better air circulation.
Hydration is key: Drink water consistently throughout the day, even if you don’t feel thirsty. Limit or avoid alcohol, caffeine and sugary beverages, as they can dehydrate you. Replenish electrolytes especially if you are sweating a lot. Water rich fruits like melon, berries and cucumbers can help replace lost salts and minerals.
Apply cold packs: Wrap ice cubes in a plastic bag, cover with a damp towel and place them on your neck or armpits for quick cooling.
Choose your meals wisely: Opt for light, cool meals with proteins, healthy fats, and cooling vegetables. Incorporate water-rich foods like watermelon, cucumber, strawberries, citrus fruits, and leafy greens into your diet. Focus on gut health with gut-friendly foods and/or supplements.
Keep your environment cool: Use ceiling fans to rotate counterclockwise in the summer to create a wind-chill effect. Block direct sunlight with blackout curtains, keep windows open during cooler hours, and switch off heat-generating electronics. Switch to energy -efficient LED bulbs.
Take cool showers or baths: They can significantly reduce core body temperature and provide immediate relief.
Know the signs of heat-related illness: Be aware of symptoms like dizziness, nausea, fainting, excessive sweating, muscle cramps and confusion. Move to a cool place, drink water, apply cold cloths. Seek medical attention, if needed.
